Chapter 11

I guess I’d always suspected this moment would come. At first, he’d hidden his interest in Jenny behind the cloak of his role in looking after Sada. That was the first time he’d really spoken to us, when he’d taken us aside and talked about making sure their relationship didn’t get in the way of Sada concentrating on his final exams.

But from that moment when he’d appeared at another party accompanied by a date who bore an uncanny resemblance to Jenny, I’d started being suspicious. Sure, he also posed as a good guy, a nice guy – but the similarities between Jenny and his date, that was way beyond coincidence. And then his bartered deal – CCTV access for the promise of me allowing him time with Jenny. Well, that was a huge, waving red flag that I couldn’t ignore and which raised all kinds of other questions.

The biggest question was ‘just what the hell was his interest?’

Did he just fancy a one-night fling?

Well, obviously not because he’d gotten me to barter both a date and then a follow-up weekend for my four days of CCTV access.

But still, maybe just a short-term thing – a getting to know each other date followed by a lust-filled weekend?

This certainly seemed feasible. Especially when you factor in the way his young friend Sada still felt about Jenny. Yes, Sada had occasionally shared Jenny with friends on a few, debauched nights of passion. But on the whole, he’d been very possessive – certainly not entertaining any ideas of Jenny having any other meaningful relationships. After all, towards the end I got the distinct idea he even resented the time Jenny spent with me – and I was her husband!

I was pretty sure he’d have been deeply unhappy if Robert had picked up where he’d left off – stepping in as Jenny’s regular boyfriend.

All of this speculation, all of this not knowing was driving me crazy. So rather naively I decided to go directly to the horse’s mouth. Arranging to meet up with Robert when I knew Jenny was busy at the dance studio.

I always had a slightly sinking feeling whenever I drove through those solid-looking security gates of his. Partly a feeling of being trapped, of being manipulated. Partly a feeling of inferiority, aware of the money and power that someone like Robert held. Jenny and I weren’t poor – far from it, I had a good and growing salary – but I knew Robert was in a different league.

“Mike, right on time! Just what I’d have expected from a professional guy like you,” he smiled as he ushered me through and into the shaded rear area, pouring me a coffee as he gestured for me to sit down.

We talked about business and the prospects for the Heat and the Dolphins, and then I decided to get straight to it.

“Robert, I believe in straight-talking, so I want to explain to you how things are between Jenny and me, and then I’d like to discuss just what it is that your intentions are towards Jenny.
